"In memory of Umar Dimaev and Valid Dagaev"
100x100, oil on canvas

2024

Valid Dagaev reminisced about Umar Dimaev: “During the years of deportation, Umar Dimaev's harmonica saved thousands of his compatriots from despair; he became a symbol of their lost homeland for the deported people. His melodies preserved and conveyed to us the bitterness of separation from our homeland and the joy of returning to our native places.”

Rustam Yakhikhanov creates a work of art that is a dedication: two outstanding musicians, two strong, talented personalities, two instruments that are so different, yet so close to any Caucasian person. The artist paints an allegorical picture that lacks specific portrait details, but which says much more about these heroes than their images. The author creates a symbolic painting in which each element has its own figurative meaning: the ancient dechig pondar here undoubtedly refers to Valid Dagaev, bringing to mind those rhythmically distinctive, somewhat sharp, abrupt, expressive motifs to the sounds of which the ancient Chechen illanchi performed illi. And the accordion undoubtedly belongs to the image of the Caucasian “Orpheus” - Umar Dimaev, reminding the viewer of melodic, piercing, flowing sounds that seem to echo among the mountain slopes.  Suitcases here are a symbol of the journey, both forced and voluntary.

And in front of all these symbolic objects stands a jug decorated with floral embossing - the image of a woman - a mother, the image of the Motherland, which always waited for them.
